Relentless

With you by our side, we never give up

This is radical, important, grown up stuff, effected quietly by people who are in the fight for the long term.

Daily Telegraph

You win new laws

One of the best ways to protect farm animals is to make factory farm practices illegal. You’ve helped win historic new laws that prevent cruelty to farm animals.

Banned:Veal crates

Together we tackled the appalling confinement of calves in veal crates where playful animals spend their miserable, 14-week lives confined in a crate just two feet wide and can’t even turn around.

You did this:

  • Veal crates were banned in the UK in 1990; the ban was extended to Europe in 2007.
  • The lives of 5 million calves a year are transformed, thanks to you.

Banned:Barren battery cages

In these horrendous wire cages, each hen has standing-space smaller than an A4 sheet of paper and can’t even spread her wings.

You did this:

  • In 2012, barren cages were banned across Europe.
  • By the end of 2016, hundreds of major food companies worldwide – from McDonald’s to Walmart and Tesco – had pledged to ditch all cages for laying hens.

Banned:Sow stalls

Sow stalls are narrow metal cages, confining pregnant pigs behind bars. You've helped trigger a global movement away from sow stalls.

You did this:

  • 1999 UK and 2013 EU legislation means 8 million sows a year are no longer confined permanently.
  • Chinese farmers rear nearly half the pigs on Earth but with your support we are working with them to ditch factory farming.

Thanks to you, millions of farm animals have better lives every year. And we’re not done yet. Together, we will campaign to outlaw all cages and cruel farming worldwide.

Farm animals need you more than ever

In the next few years, the UK must draft new, independent animal welfare legislation. With your support we will seize the opportunity of Brexit to fight for stronger welfare laws, and protect British farm animals from any back-sliding into further cruelty. With your help, we will relentlessly push for political compassion around the world, until all farm animals are reared humanely.

You think big

The fastest way to make the biggest difference to the greatest number of farm animals is by harnessing the power of big business. Thanks to you, our specialist Food Business team works relentlessly to persuade global food giants to transform millions of animals’ lives.

You did this:

  • Over 342 MILLION ANIMALS are set to benefit each year from our Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards. And a potential further 377 MILLION are set to benefit as a result of our partnership work.

If you eat food, this matters

Our aim is to bring about fresh thinking and a new approach to the way food is produced. With your support, we will challenge and persuade the world’s most powerful and influential food companies to only use higher-welfare milk, meat and eggs across their entire product ranges.

You expose the truth

Investigations are the backbone of Compassion’s work.

With your support, our hard-hitting investigations are relentless in exposing the cruelty and suffering that underpins intensive farming.

Exposed: The dirty world of pig farming

In 2013, we visited Irish pig farms and filmed the horrors we found: pigs living ankle deep in excrement, open wounds infested with flies, emaciated animals left in corridors to die. Our hard- hitting film was sent to politicians, demanding they force Ireland – and other countries who flout the law – to meet their animal welfare obligations.

Exposed: Europe's shameful secret

Few people realised rabbits are farmed in their millions across Europe. Our team revealed the true story. Countless animals in tiny wire cages, stacked in sheds piled with excrement. We’re using this evidence to fight for new legislation to protect these ‘invisible’, vulnerable creatures.

You did this:

  • Thanks to you, Compassion’s investigators have relentlessly exposed the suffering inflicted by the long distance live transport of farm animals. And 98% fewer animals are now exported live from the UK.

A light in the darkness

We uncover hard evidence that enables us to fight for farm animal protection – and to hold to account those who break the law. With you by our side, we never stop protecting farm animals who need us.

I deal with lots of NGOs and many of them are fine organisations, but I can honestly say that Compassion in World Farming is probably the finest. It isn’t just that their cause is just. They espouse it with such calmness and reason.

Martin Hickman, The Independent

Now their future is in your hands

Factory farming is by far the biggest cause of animal cruelty on the planet. With you beside us, we will work tirelessly to see factory farming replaced with a humane and sustainable food system.

Imagine the profound changes we can achieve for farm animals as we continue to work together.

Imagine:An end to
caged cruelty

  • Cages confine and restrict animals and deny their natural instincts. Despite the obvious failings of this system, around 700 million farm animals are confined in cages in the EU every year.
  • It’s time to evolve. Each generation must decide which injustice and cruelty it will stop. It is time for this generation to stand up and End the Cage Age. With you, we will work relentlessly to eliminate cages.

Imagine:The food industry protecting animals

  • Leading companies have the power to make fast and decisive improvements that can benefit millions of animals, each year.
  • It’s time to act. Thanks to you, we’re working hard to persuade companies to use or sell only higher welfare meat, milk or eggs. These changes not only reduce suffering today, they can take us to a tipping point, triggering a food and farming revolution.

Imagine:A world without factory farming

  • Intensive farming doesn’t just cause immense suffering for farm animals. It’s also deeply damaging to public health, wildlife, the environment and our ability to feed a growing world population.
  • It’s time to fight back. Together, we must make decision-makers understand just how damaging factory farming is to the quality of our food, the countryside and animal welfare.

The need for change is urgent

We stand at a crossroads. If we take the wrong turn, factory farming will bring further damage, waste and animal suffering.

But, thanks to your achievements so far, our generation has the power to choose a different direction. One that leads to a better, healthier legacy for farm animals, our children and our children’s children. Their future is in your hands. Please come with us.

We invest your support wisely

We are committed to financial transparency and to using your gifts wisely to advance the wellbeing of animals across the world.

Almost half of all our work is only possible thanks to gifts people make in their Wills. This page is dedicated to the memory of all the wonderful supporters who have sadly passed away and kindly left a gift in their Will. Their legacy is our relentless work to end factory farming and stop farm animal cruelty, wherever it exists.

Together, we'll make cruelty history

For 50 years, amazing, determined supporters like you have been speaking out for frightened, hurt and suffering farm animals who have no voices to speak for themselves.

Together, we have thrown open cages, taken away tethers and let fresh air and sunlight flood in for millions of animals. Their lives are so much better because of you, each year.

We’re not finished yet. As long as there is a single farm animal in a factory farm, we will be there, doing everything in our power to help them.

With you, we are relentless.

With you, we will end cruel factory farming once and for all.

CIWF constantly battles to improve the lives of farm animals everywhere. They keep going no matter what, and for that I truly thank them and am glad I joined CIWF that day years ago.

Mrs Christine A Manders, Compassion supporter

You can help end cruel, shameful factory farming

Factory farming is the biggest cause of animal pain and suffering on the planet. It harms our health. It damages the environment. It is responsible for unparalleled food waste. By gaining recognition of the true cost of this appalling system, together we will achieve the biggest impact, the greatest change. Together we’ll make cruelty history.

The challenge:

All too often, the system treats animals as commodities to be traded like sacks of potatoes. When seen as a mere product, farm animals suffer horrible cruelties, like being shipped thousands of miles without food or rest.

The campaign:

Peter Roberts believed passionately that each farm animal is an individual with physical and emotional needs. In 1987 he decided to tackle the ‘impossible’: demanding a new law that recognises farm animals as sentient beings.

Our action:

His peers called him naive but Peter refused to give up, instead sparking a massive campaign across Europe. In 1991 Compassion presented a paper petition with one million names, in 36 boxes, to the president of the European Parliament.

The result:

Our determination paid off. In 1997, for the first time in history, animals were legally recognised as sentient beings. This historic agreement now underpins and paves the way for all future will check/add tail once I have downloads hi res improvements to farm animal welfare in Europe.
