Victims of factory farming

It’s not only our farm animals who are suffering

In factory farms worldwide, farm animals are being treated in cruel and appalling ways. Hens are crammed into cages, pigs can barely move in narrow crates and chickens are forced to grow so fast their legs can’t support them.

At the same time, a catastrophe is happening in our natural world that most people know nothing about. In the mad scramble to produce meat as cheaply as possible, wildlife is being wiped off the face of the earth.

Compassion in World Farming has done an amazing job in achieving real changes for millions of farm animals.

In the past 40 years, half of our wild animal and plant life has been lost as rainforests, savannah and pasture are destroyed. Two thirds of this devastation has been driven by food production.

But how does factory farming harm wildlife?

The answer is the devastating principle on which intensive farming is built: confining defenceless animals in cages, pens and stalls and feeding them on grain. There are over 50 billion animals raised for food in industrial systems worldwide, all of which need to be fed. As factory farming grows, millions of square miles of natural habitat around the world are being ripped up to plant crops to feed livestock. The catastrophic result is that, as animal feed crops move in, wildlife is pushed out.

As their habitats disappear and pesticide-drenched monocultures of soya and palm trees take their place, many species are being driven towards extinction.

With your support, we’ve carried out an in-depth, worldwide investigation into the true costs of factory farming and the results have just been published in our hard-hitting book, Dead Zone: Where the Wild Things Were. This evidence will give us a unique opportunity to wake up the world to the biggest cause of animal cruelty on the planet: factory farming.

With your support we will:

  • Campaign for a new Good Food Act in the UK: After Brexit, there must be no backsliding on your hard-fought legal victories for hens, pigs and dairy calves, and the UK must take the lead on animal welfare.
  • Fund the first ever international conference on intensive farming and wildlife: We’ll enlist the support of environmental organisations and wildlife experts, and prove to the rest of the world that – like you – they must fight factory farming.
  • Show consumers the whole cost of cheap, cruel meat: Using films, media stunts and exhibitions, we’ll force society to face up to the abuse and suffering. Together we’ll give wildlife a future, and farm animals a life worth living.

Jaguars farmed to death

Brazil is home to half the jaguars left in the world. Now their numbers are shrinking as their habitat is deforested to make way for soya plantations. So far, the EU alone is to blame for 13 million hectares of South American land being hijacked to grow soya – largely to feed animals trapped in crowded cages and sheds.

Elephants wiped out

Over half the original rainforests of Sumatra have gone. They’ve been ripped up and replaced with palm plantations. The palm kernel grown is often used for cheap animal feed in factory farms – further fuelling the destruction of the forests. These rainforests are home to the endangered Sumatran elephant, whose numbers have plummeted by 70% in the last decade. As the appetite for cheap meat grows, their habitat is destroyed.

Penguins dying off

Even our oceans aren’t safe from the consequences of factory farming. In South Africa, the native penguins have been listed as endangered. Commercial fisheries are hoovering up the penguins’ food supply. Much of this vast fish catch is then ground down and fed to pigs, chickens – and other fish – trapped in intensive farms.

Help stop cruel factory farming while there’s still time

It’s urgent that we wake the world up to the devastation factory farming causes. Together we can protect farm animals from the misery of factory farming, take the pressure off natural habitats around the world, and restore wildlife to its rightful place.
