“In 2018 I undertook an investigation for Compassion in World Farming into the treatment of animals in the European fish industry. I felt I was prepared for the worst. Yet I was still taken by surprise at the level of suffering I witnessed.
“Just like factory farmed mammals and birds, many farmed fish are subjected to unnatural, inhumane conditions. Whether kept in tanks on land, or in pens in the sea, I found they can face a wretched life and a cruel death.” CIWF INVESTIGATOR

The fish slaughter methods Compassion’s investigators witnessed should, we believe, already be deemed illegal according to existing legislation.
European law mandates animals should not suffer unnecessarily while being killed. Yet our team witnessed clear and prolonged suffering. It seems that new legislation, as well as better enforcement of existing laws, is urgently needed to properly protect fish and stop the cruel treatment of these animals.
Can you help us turn the evidence from our investigation into action? Fish are sentient, thinking animals and they should not have to endure inhumane conditions.
Indeed, there are producers, including some in the UK and the Netherlands, who are using effective stunning methods before slaughter. But these practices need to be written into national legislation in the UK. And, in the EU, Member States need to take the urgent first step of enforcing current legislation to protect fish during slaughter.
The next steps for Rethink Fish
Compassion's Rethink Fish campaign has three vitally important goals that could make a difference to billions of animals:
- A permanent improvement in fish welfare standards and legislation.
- A reduction in overall consumption of fish globally.
- A reduction of the negative influence of aquaculture on wild fish and the environment.
To achieve these ambitious goals, with your support:
Our Food Business Team will persuade and help major companies to move away from cruel slaughter practices. Already, we’ve given Tesco our Innovation Award for their introduction of humane slaughter practices for sea bass and sea bream sourced in Turkey. And we are continuing to engage with major supermarkets to help bring humanely reared fish to all supermarket shelves.
Our Policy Team will push for proper enforcement of the EU Slaughter Directive, which specifies animals should not suffer unnecessarily when being killed. And we will campaign in the UK for new legislation that recognises the particular needs of farmed fish, and bans cruel treatment of these vulnerable animals.
And, last but not least, you can help our Campaigns Team get the word out to the public that fish matter: that they deserve a good life. Consumers need to understand that the reality of fish farming, right now, around the world, means a miserable life for billions of animals.
Our investigation into underwater factory farms has shown they are every bit as shocking as those on land. No sentient, thinking animal should have to endure such conditions.
With a donation today, you will be pioneering a growing movement to end the inhumane treatment of all farm animals and spread the word to Rethink Fish.
