Over 16 million British hens and farrowing sows are living in cages right now. The fact is, the UK is slipping in the international league table of farm animal welfare.
Some countries have completely BANNED such cages: Sweden’s sows and Luxembourg’s hens are already cage-free. Plus, Germany and Austria will ban ‘enriched’ cages for laying hens from 2028 and 2020 respectively.
In reality, today, the UK is probably just above average. If this were a school report, it could only read – ‘Can and must do better!’
Donate today to keep up the fight against factory farming, and tell the UK’s leaders that farm animals deserve better than cruel cages.
The UK’s farm animal cage facts don’t make pleasant reading:
- Over half of the country’s mother pigs give birth in confinement – in cages only big enough for them to lie down or stand. These animals have tremendous mothering urges. They want to seek privacy and comfort, to build a soft, safe nest to bear their precious young. In a farrowing crate, they cannot even turn around.
- More than a third of British hens spend their lives laying around 320 eggs a year, in ‘enriched’ cages. The ‘enrichments’ are a travesty – from inadequate perches to small plastic scratching pads. They fail to meet many of the animals’ basic needs and, per animal, the cages offer little more room than an old barren cage.
In a nation of animal lovers, how can such cruelty continue? Now is the time to shift the UK’s farm animal welfare report from just above average to 10/10. To something the country can truly be proud of.
End the Cage Age Campaign update – UK and EU
Your support to date has helped us launch Phase Two of the cornerstone End the Cage Age Campaign, just as we’d hoped.
The last few months have been a whirlwind of press coverage, online film broadcasts, on-the-ground events and social media support from celebrities like Ricky Gervais, Pamela Anderson and Peter Egan.
And, thanks to the network of 140 NGOs and charities that you helped to build, over 600,000 citizens across Europe have already signed the petition to force the EU Commission to consider legislation to ban all cages for farm animals.
In the UK, your support has encouraged tens of thousands of people to join the campaign. And, again, we are bringing together a host of charities to stand with us – with you – to eradicate cages from British farms. But we need to do more – we can’t let up.
Please will you make a donation today? You’ll be standing firm against cages, against all cruel confinement of farm animals. You’ll be convincing the food industry and lawmakers that now is the time to do better.
Compassion exists because of people like you, people who are not discouraged and never give up. And this timeline shows that real change is possible when we stand united. With your gift today, we will do better for all farmed animals and End the Cage Age.
